Roof Flashing for Bathroom Fan

Key Points:

-Flashing must be installed correctly to prevent leaking

-Roof vent must be installed between 2 rafters/trusses

-Cut whole in the roof, at least 2 feet away from any other vents, valleys where only shingles exist.

-Using a flat nail bar pry up shingles and remove nails on shingles and slip the vent up under the shingles.

-Pry up shingles when its cool.

-Cut shingles to match vent shape leaving at least a 1/2" clearance shingles from touching vent.

-Nail vent to roof, caulk exposed nails.

How to correctly shingle around roof vents and flashings (roof penetrations).
Shingle up to the roof penetration, don’t allow the shingles to stick up and rest on the pipe this will cause the flashing not to lay flat on the roof deck Cut the top of shingles off where they hit the pipe so they will lay flat on the roof deck, cut them so they are about ¼” from the pipe

Now slip the flashing over the pipe and down on top of the cut shingles. The bottom of the flashing should not stick down past the bottom of the course of shingles it sits on. The shingle shown below this vent needs to go on top of this vent. This is wrong.

This vent is installed correctly notice how it sits down flat on this course of shingles.

Once you have the flashing set in place you should nail it at the bottom in each corner. Important Note: Always nail flashings at the bottom; some times you may need to nail them around the edges in order to have them sit down firmly to the roof, never nail flashings toward the center where the pipe is. (For bigger vents more nails may be required at the bottom approx 1 nail every 12-16 inches). The objective here is not to allow the wind and rain to blow up under the flashing.

This top shingle will need to be cut straight up approx. 1", it'll need to sit directly below the double white line, (5 5/8" is the distance between each course) the double white line is the nail line, you can nail between the double white line and the top single line, the width of the cut will be determined by the distance between the shingles on each side of the vent.

Note: The size of the gap along the sides of the vent is very important on roofs that have many trees sticking above them that drop leaves, these leaves can get lodged in between the vent and the flashing causing a dam and preventing water from flowing, possibly causing a leak
